Story Behind The Song
How my Dad inspired Take Me Dancing

I’d love to share a live video which is my favourite piece of footage from the three live concerts I performed. The song is Take Me Dancing and it’s Track 9 on my album titled Breathe.

I wrote Take Me Dancing after a dream about dancing with my Dad. The dream was bizarre and yet poignant. Bizarre because we had never danced before. And the mere idea of it would make you smile if you had known him with his Scottish, working-class roots. Ballroom dancing was not on his agenda. But it was also poignant. Back in 1997 – when I had this dream – he had been gone from us for 16 years and I had not been able to walk, let alone dance, for 14 years. All around it was a strange dream and this song spilled out from it.

It is the little girl who captivates me as she sings along and plays. This sweet child has no idea of the story behind the song. One of the greatest gifts children give us is this kind of oblivion. She is in her own world, in contrast to the audience. Even though they do not know the story behind this song, they feel it and are listening intently – they are in my world. This contrast always gives me goosebumps when I see it. The most special moment for me is when the camera lands on my beautiful Mum as she watches me play.

I hope you like the video of Take Me Dancing. I’m sure you’ve felt this way about someone you’ve lost and desperately want to see again? I know that, as much as I have longed for it, I’ve never had that dream again.
